Now onto the story.

Seth’s Story

Can you imagine losing your job and your girlfriend over a weekend and then having your dad pass a year later?

Sounds tragic. But sometimes life gives us what we need, when we need it.

And in Seth’s case, that was space to spend the last year of his father’s life collaborating on a project that was meaningful to both of them, on many levels, and in different ways.

Seth and his Dad when he was a bit younger…

This one hits home for me. I lost my mom when I was 20.

Without explanation and logic I packed up and moved to my parents home in Las Vegas, of all places, and spent the last four months of my mom’s life with her.

It was under very different circumstances.

She was struggling with alcoholism, but the time was a gift that I cherish to this day.

I’m on the hunt for inspiring people.

Noodle on…

As you listen to my conversation with Seth, I’d encourage you to think about 3 questions:

  • What should you let go of that no longer serves you?

  • How can you expand your gratitude practice to include people and experiences that weren’t positive in the moment?

  • How can you co-create a meaningful experience with someone who is in their final years of life?

Bonus material

The output of Seth and his Dad’s collaboration is out.

If you are a leader or an employee, The Character of Your Company is an must read, especially if purpose and culture are a top priority. And if they’re not, you may want to check your priorities.

A bit about the book…

Your experience at work is defined by how employees behave at work and how an organization treats employees, suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders.

When everyone at an organization develops a greater awareness of their behavior, understands its impact on others, and chooses to transform certain behaviors, they help an organization become more human and ultimately, more alive.

In The Character of Your Company, esteemed ethics professor Denis Collins and his son Seth deliver a practical guidebook filled with both inspiring stories and numerous exercises, reflections, and programs to guide any employee or leader in an organization to both discover a greater sense of meaning, purpose, and connection in their work and to lead others to do so as well.

Double bonus

I am 1/20 through my list of 99 things to stop doing.

Here’s a recap of 1-5:

  1. Stop living like you have an infinite amount of time

  2. Stop picking up the rope

  3. Stop being mean to gate agents

  4. Stop going against your gut

  5. Stop eating food in wrappers

Why am I doing this?

I've become a big believer that in order to live a life you were meant to live, you need to stop doing some things that are holding you back.

So I brainstormed and came up with more than 150. Likely duplicates.

The list is as much for me as it is anyone who wants to go on this journey.

I will meander through areas like mindset, lifestyle, health, work, finances, family, friends, travel, hobbies etc.

If you're interested, follow the progress I make on LinkedIn over the the weeks and months ahead.

I plan to post 2-3 per week.
